It was the final minute of extra time in the 1995 Cup Winners’ Cup final in Paris and it looked like Arsenal and Real Zaragoza were heading for a potentially gruelling penalty shoot-out. John Hartson had cancelled out Juan Esnáider’s opener in the last fifteen minutes of the second-half, and another thirty minutes was needed to see which of them would hold aloft the Coupe des Coupes trophy.
With just twenty seconds left on the clock Andoni Cedrún, the Zaragoza keeper, hoofed the ball upfield from a goal-kick onto the head of Arsenal defender Andy Linighan. Linighan misplaced the header and the ball fell to Zaragoza’s Nayim who speculatively and spectacularly lobbed the ball from 45 yards over the head of David Seaman and into the net. To add insult to injury, Nayim was signed from Arsenal’s North London rivals Tottenham only two Summers before.
