Football without fans with is nothing. We know, we hear it all the time. But this summer, at least one brand is putting their money where their mouth is – and the results are decent.
Looking to break the mould in 2017-18, adidas asked fans of some of Europe’s biggest clubs to design their team’s third shirt, using their online Creator Studio. And the designs flooded in.
The new United design honours the trinity of Best, Law and Charlton, with a graphic that shows their Old Trafford statue. Taking MUFC culture from the stadium to the shirt, keen-eyed fans might spot the statue of European Cup-winning coach Matt Busby near the hem as well, completing a legendary look for the club’s UCL return. The spirit of ‘68 is strong in this one.
Giving their secondary colour of their home kit the main focus, Real’s design takes its inspiration from the team’s old quartered third kit, worn by legends like Davor Suker, Roberto Carlos and Raul in 1996-97. With its pixel pattern connecting two contrasting shades of teal, this stunning shirt for the European champs carries some neat monochrome accents too.
An off-white base with dark grey accents, Bayern’s shirt is highlighted by an ‘dripping paint’ pattern that fades away towards the shorts. And while we’re not sure of the inspiration, the result is an interesting one – preserving those famous colours, while launching a fresh new image that puts a modern spin on standard stripes. A design for life, or a one-season wonder?
With a host of weapons in their attacking arsenal, Serie A champions Juventus will head into battle this season in this unfamiliar uniform – with the craft green of their military-style third shirt reflecting a style not seen since the 1950s. The multi-time Scudetto winners will hope this design can help them push on to European glory next spring.
What are we sayin?
So, four shirts, from four fans, for four of Europe’s top clubs. In a world full of templates, we are buzzing the guys at adidas have given the fans their say – and turning these bespoke beauties into a reality. But which of the new third shirts is Kitbag’s own fan favourite? Well, we’re leaning towards the two teams who will contest the UEFA Super Cup next month.
United’s third shirt is a smart tribute, reminding us of the club’s 1994-95 home strip and its own Old Trafford-based pattern. But we think Real have smashed it this time – with the shirt’s design innovation enhanced by the sweetest of colour schemes. Endorsed by some of the Bernabéu’s greatest names, we expect to see many flashes of teal tearing up the Champions League this season. It’s almost time for Real to turn on the style again – and with this confident and contemporary third shirt, they’ve got a winning start.
The new adidas third kits drop on Kitbag today (July 21st), with a wide range of sizes on site, including the shorts and socks you need to complete your third kit look. Kitbag as always bosses it with printing options – with Lukaku, Ronaldo, Lewandowski and Higuain to name a few. We’ve even got the official UCL arm patches too.
