Bundesliga and Beyond: All-New German Club Shirts for 2016-17

With the 2016-17 season now underway, we’ve highlighted a few of the Bundesliga big guns who unveiled new jerseys this summer, while drawing attention to a few other favourites, each new to the Kitbag site.

Bayern Munich

For decades, a core component of the reigning German Bundesliga champions’ identity, the new BAYERN MUNICH home kit brings a renewed emphasis to the pride of Bavaria’s classic red jersey, while combining both modern and traditional design features.

With its core red base and white accents reflecting the colours worn to the 1975 and 1982 European Cup Finals, the 2016-17 Bayern home shirt is embellished for a new season by subtle and prominent striping, while retaining a vintage polo collar for an effective throwback style.

The new Bayern away jersey meanwhile represents an innovation for the club’s change kit identity, introducing a triple-tone grey image for the first time in Bayern Munich history.

With the three shades represented in a diagonal design format, black accents embellish both the jersey’s collar and sleeve trim, with adidas Three Stripe shoulders, inner and outer back neck messages and rear BAYERN MÜNCHEN wording all effectively coloured in solar red.


Borussia Dortmund

Since 1909, BORUSSIA DORTMUND have forged a unique path through German and European football, capturing a slew of Bundesliga titles and Champions League honours to boot.

Now, fans of this beloved German club, DFB-Pokal runners-up mere months ago, can take the identity of die Schwarzgelben into a brand new season with the 2016-17 BVB home shirt.

Designed to replicate the distinct sea of yellow that envelops Signal Iduna Park, the 2016-17 BVB home jersey in signature cyber yellow and black makes a seamless addition to the famed ‘Yellow Wall’ of the Südtribüne, the largest and most celebrated terrace of the modern era.

Meanwhile, the 2016-17 Dortmund away jersey inverts and adapts the club’s cyber yellow and black to produce a radical reinterpretation; one that is fresh to the eye, yet firmly BVB.

With trio of thick horizontal stripes complemented by three slimmer strips consistent in colour, the yellow outline provides the framing for the jersey’s central black and grey hoops, with accents extending to the V-neck collar and club lettering accompanying at the back.


VfL Wolfsburg

For 70 years now, die Wölfe have produced their own distinct brand of football in the fledgling city of the AutoStadt. Now, as this celebrated multi-sports entity from beside the Mittellandkanal continues its impressive expansion, the new VFL WOLFSBURG home shirt vividly represents the drive of those have steered the club forwards to date.

Making headlines as Champions League and Europa League quarter-finalists, this updated jersey allows rabid Wolfsburgers to support their team to all-new accomplishments; with 2016-17 being the 20th consecutive Bundesliga campaign for the ‘club for physical excesses’.

From Steffan Effenberg and Ivan Perišic to Edin Džeko and Kevin De Bruyne, a host of world class stars have thrilled the Volkswagen Arena in the name of Vfl Wolfsburg. However, as the club motto stresses, “Fußball ist alles”; and in the signature green of this official home jersey, fans can feel like a part of the team while cheering on Dieter Hecking’s players.


Schalke 04

With a traditional design befitting of the popular Gelsenkirchen outfit, the 2016-17 home shirt for heavyweights SCHALKE 04 is one of a number bolstered by high-performance climacool® fabric, as favoured by the Veltins-Arena side for their Bundesliga and German cup campaigns.

With extra-breathable mesh providing cool ventilation, both the 2016-17 home and away jerseys replicate the powerful image of superstars Franco di Santo, Junior Caicara and others, allowing fans to show support for the former UEFA Cup winners in comfort and conviction.

Enjoying a meteoric rise from the German fifth division at the start of the 21st century, the updated HOFFENHEIM home jersey is characterised by four dark blue diagonal stripes, while paying tribute to the club’s formation year of 1899 via authentic ‘achtzehn99’ neck lettering.

Finally, after their end-of-season survival heroics offered hopes of renewed success, EINTRACHT FRANKFURT will seek to soar to new heights in their own new home and away jerseys. 2016-17 sees the Eagles from Commerzbank-Arena preparing to swoop on the competition, in what is poised to be another competitive Bundesliga campaign.


Beyond the Bundesliga

Finally, one of the most popular sides outside the German top flight is also represented in’s 2016-17 range, with the inclusion of the irrepressible ST. PAULI. The fan-owned football flagship with a counter-culture core, Germany’s second tier pioneers have built a formidable fanbase that spans national borders, all while keeping their punk principles in tow. In chocolate brown and predominantly white respectively, St. Pauli’s new home and away jerseys will be worn by the cult heroes of the Millerntor-Stadion across 2016-17. AC
