New Balance M870v3 Trainers Blue – Review

Staff tester: Glenn Swales

Glenn is a keen runner who is training for the Manchester Marathon with the New Balance M870v3 Trainers. Below he lets us know how he got on with his new pair of trainers, from the first mile in his marathon training schedule.

Why I chose the New Balance M870v3

Having always been a fan of New Balance, I decided to invest in a new pair to wear for the Manchester Marathon and with the M870v3 boasting better technology than its predecessor, these seemed the ideal pick. The New Balance M870v3 Trainers appealed to me due to their combination of lightweight and stability, as well as many other listed benefits. I also found it to be a very reasonably priced mid-market shoe considering all it has to offer.

Benefits of the M870v3

Three big selling points that attracted me to these trainers were the lightweight stability, breathability and cushioning. The midsole foam of these trainers provides the same responsiveness and durability of heavier foams, meaning they offer just as much cushioning as heavier shoes with the benefit of being super lightweight. The highly sophisticated heel rubber gives you a real spring in your step and helps to disperse shock so runners are less likely to feel sore or risk injury. Another thing that attracted me to these trainers was the breathable mesh upper which keeps you cool and fresh. Due to the distance I would be running this was really important to me. The Abzorb crash pad adds an extra layer of cushioning from heel to midfoot, helping runners feel comfortable mile after mile. The outsole is designed to deliver superior durability in high-wear areas, which is vital if you plan on running a marathon!

First impressions

The M870v3 is undeniably a great looking shoe, and I was immediately impressed with the lightweight feel. Compared to my worn out pair which had served me well for quite some time, these felt like a huge upgrade. When I set out on my first five mile run in my new trainers, I was very impressed with how much support they offered and how comfortable they felt for a new pair of trainers. My training sessions included 5 mile runs, 8 mile runs and a 19 mile run.

I felt a high level of support through my whole foot and this made them feel really strong on all runs, from my initial five mile run. Throughout the marathon training I’ve felt a good spring from the forefoot and cushioning through the heel, which is really helping me go mile after mile.

Overall verdict

I would definitely recommend the M870v3. I had been using an older, much heavier pair of trainers before so the upgrade felt hugely beneficial, and during longer runs lightweight trainers make all the difference. The breathable mesh is also a huge bonus, helping my feet stay comfortable throughout all my runs. As promised, the outsole still looks good as new even in the high-wear areas, so this is evidence they live up to their durability claims. I have survived the marathon with no injuries, and my feet felt supported and comfortable throughout all my runs. If youโ€™re looking for a comfortable pair of trainers to offer lightweight support, the M870v3 is a great choice.
